MUSIC ADJUDICATOR
MARILYNNE J R DAVIES. BA, MEd, LRAM, Cert Ed, PGCA, FRSA
Welsh Eisteddfodau provided Marilynne Davies with her early experiences of performance on piano, cello and singing in all its forms. Since then she has continued as a performer, teacher and conductor and was until recently Head of the School of Performance at the College of Rippon and York St. John - a post that embraced Music, Dance, drama, Film and Television. She now has a busy freelance career as an adjudicator at national and international festivals, as a voice consultant, teacher and conductor, and as a leader of a variety of workshops. She is also involved in arts consultancy which has taken her into the world of film archiving and led to opportunities to work with dancers in music theatre.
She has sung with professional orchestras including the London Mozart Players and has conducted choirs for BBC and ITV - the largest being a choir of 1100 school children. Her experiernce in teaching ranges from nursery to post-graduate levels and has involved classroom and individual teaching as well as being external examiner and assessor in performance for a number of universities at the graduate and post-graduate level. She has been Warden for the Music in Education Section of the Incorporated Society of Musicians and is on the council of the Association of British Choral Directors.
When not making, talking or listening to music, she enjoys collecting English enamel snuff boxes (for interest, not for use!) and walking (the softies type of walking - coastal paths and contour walks).
Marilynne Davies is an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals.
SPEECH & DRAMA
TIMOTHY McCARTHY. BA, HDE, FTCL, LGSMD, FLCM, ALAM, PGCA
Timothy McCarthy studied Speech & Drama at the Cork School of Music, where he took both Teachers'
and Performers' Diplomas. He graduated from the National University of Ireland with a BA Degree and the Higher Diploma in Education. He holds the Post Graduate Certificate in Adjudicating. At present he is studying for a Masters Degree in Theatre and Drama Studies.
He runs his own Speech & Drama Studio, where he teaches all aspects of the subject. He is the Drama Tutor at the Annual Youth Camp Festival of Music, Dance and Drama, Sri Lanka and Production Director for the International Institute of Mystical Rose, Sri Lanka for whom he has directed both plays and musicals. He works closely with the Irish National Council for the Blind, recording audio books for its members. He conducted Teacher Training Courses in Speech & Drama in Kuala Lumpur, Colombo and at his studio in Cork. He led a number of workshops for English teachers in Bangkok, Malacca and Sri Lanka using Speech & Drama methods as a means of teaching English. He has given training courses for Church Ministers and directed an Adult Drama Company for ten years, specialising in One Act Play Productions.
Timothy is an Adjudicator Member of the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech, a member of the Society of Teachers' of Speech and Drama, the Irish Institute of Drama and Communication and the Drama League of Ireland. He is the Administrator of Feis Maitiu, (the Cork Music and Drama Festival), and has adjudicated at Festivals in Ireland, the UK, Isle of Man, Jersey, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong.
BRASS
PATRICK McCARTHY
Patrick McCarthy is Principal Trumpet No. 2 of the Ulster Orchestra, a position he has held since 2006. Patrick studied at Lancaster University and Birmingham Conservatoire before establishing himself as a freelance player with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Shakespeare Company Band. He worked frequently in Germany with the Philharmonia of the Nations, before his appointment in Belfast. He continues to be in demand throughout the UK, having played in the last year with the London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestra.
STRINGS
NIKKI JOHNSTON
Nikki Johnston started playing violin at the City of Belfast School of Music and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After a period of freelance work and teaching in London she returned to Belfast in 1990 where she worked with the Ulster Orchestra. She also played in various string quartets and toured the UK and Ireland as well as recording work. In addition to teaching privately she has taught in the City of Belfast School of Music, St Malachy's College and is currently in Assumption Grammar School.
WOODWIND
DREW ROWAN
Drew Rowan retired in 2007 from his post as Head of Woodwind for the South-Eastern Education and Library Board where he had taught for 30 years.
He is greatly committed to the flute and has always been involved in bands - The Flute Band League etc., adjudicating at many contests for flute and other instruments, including accordian. During this varied career he has played with the Ulster Orchestra and the former BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra as well as numerous radio broadcasts. We welcome Drew back to Carrickfergus after a number of years as a supportive friend.
